LUMINARIA 2018: WWKY
ABOUT
Luminaria 2018 has engaged artist Patty Ortiz to present a performance exhibition entitled, “I Am Here” based on the lives of involuntary immigrants to the United States who entered the country as children. The project requires 10 young people under the age of thirty who fit the criteria of Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and would be willing to share their experience and feelings about this issue.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Ortiz will create a video montage of a floral landscape over a soundtrack of young voices. At recurring intervals a disruptive and alarming image will depict a hand wrenching a flowering plant in slow motion, roots and all, from the potting soil of a red clay pot illuminated against a black background. The accompanying soundtrack will amplify and distort incidental clicks, buzzing and muffled gong-like tones. The video monitor will rise above 300 potted plants with beautiful blooming flowers. Throughout the night of November 8th young performers will silently and quietly rearrange the pots in random patterns of their own device. The workers will occasionally silently hand flowers to members of the audience.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The project will hire ten undocumented youth who will meet with Ortiz as a group to share stories, insights and images that might point up their plight as part of the video. The participants will also help build other physical elements of the piece and be part of a silent performance in the gallery as a live element of the installation.
The final artwork will be presented at Luminaria 2018 on November 9th and 10th. Hours will be flexible and workdays will vary except for mandatory dates stated below. Ortiz will confer with each applicant to determine availability and time commitment on non-mandatory dates.
