WWKY: Pillow Talk
February 2 – 18, 2017
WWKY: Pillow Talk, a performance installation in the ongoing series Work Won’t Kill You by Patty Ortiz, reconfigures the famous split screen scene from the 1959 Doris Day/Rock Hudson screwball comedy by the same name. In keeping with the underlying premise of the Work Won’t Kill You concept, Ortiz pays employees to punch the clock, wear work uniforms and engage in structured labor that requires discipline but also demands imagination. In this case, workers clad in pajama-uniforms sit in bed and interact anonymously with gallery visitors through text message conversations that are simultaneously projected onto the gallery walls. The piece uses the ubiquitous touchscreen smartphone as a device to question the nature of language and interpersonal relationships in an emoji universe. What do we mean by the terms public and private, intimate and impersonal, true and false, staged and real, written and illustrated?
The performance installation will be presented in a joint exhibition with Kimberly Aubuchon at Terminal 136 Gallery in the Blue Star Complex, San Antonio, Texas from February 2 though February 18, 2017. The opening reception will be Thursday, February 2, 6 to 9pm. Terminal 136 will also be open for First Friday, February 3, 6 – 9pm.
